Where Have I Been?

Well, I have been here. Mostly home trying to occupy time. A little bit ago I had X-Rays done on my Knee. After the follow-up appointment put me in a funk. The doctor gave me a list of do’s and don’ts. More don’ts than do’s though. Not happy about it. But it is understandable. She is a great doctor and looking out for my best interests and my health.

So here is the diagnosis. Arthritis. Not Rheumatoid yet. But my RF is still climbing and that will come in time she said. So for now Osteoarthritis is the issue. She said I had it in multiple locations. Bleh! So she banned me from doing my workouts for 6 weeks. I have PT but it seems to be making it worse, that makes me cranky. Not just that but the fact that I have goals I want to meet and these PT exercises are not big calorie burners. Most of them are done seated, not much of a workout. Soon I will be allowed to do some yoga though. I am looking forward to getting to do anything right now.

The point in the PT is to get the joint stronger and more lubricated. Then I go back and see the doctor and she is going to see where things are at pain wise. If they are not satisfactory she will refer me to an Orthopedic specialist and start me on corticosteroid injections in the knee. The way the knee is now that I am going through the PT it is pretty much a given the injections will happen. I am ready to get them. I have enough pain from the Fybromyalgia and Raynaud’s disease.

All I know is I am ready to get back to “real”, more productive workouts. I want to see results. I don’t want to sit around on my ass all day when I would rather get in some Pump or jog or even power walk. In due time though. Patience is key and pushing it and possible opening myself up to further injury is not a worth risk taking.

So I am around. I am pouting. I am bored. But I am alright. Hoping soon things will start going my way, if not with the help of the doctor we can hopefully find a middle ground that satisfies both of us.

I may not blog daily but I will still blog on occasion until things get moving again.

Days 38 & 39 of Les Mills Pump

lmp day 38 and 39

Days 38 and 39 of 120 Days of Les Mills Pump are officially completed.

Yesterday’s workout was Pump and Shred. I kind of listened to the doctor and cut out the lunges. I still did the squats just did them with half the weight on the bar as normal and didn’t dig as deep as normal. Modified the plank track and just held plank while they were doing the planks with alternating arm circles. The whole splint thing made those impossible to do.

Hard Core Abs as well as Flow were on the calendar for today. Both went well. The splint is off my hand so I was able to give the alternating push up planks a go. I got a few sets in before it started to hurt my hand, once that happened I held plank. I just can’t wait for this knuckle to heal up so I can get back to doing things properly. Flow went well.  Did not have to modify anything but did not feel as stretched out and loose as i normally do after completing the practice.  Probably because I am a genius that decided that eating spicy Thai soup 20 minutes before abs and yoga was a great idea. Those down dogs were spicy. Not in a good way either. The heartburn is still haunting me!

It was nice being able to workout during daylight hours today though! Housework and things like that were passed on so i could head down while Mr. Baby napped. No biggie, there is always tomorrow. It surely is not happening tonight.  Tonight was Fall Fest at Emma’s school and wearing Mr. Baby around pooped me out!

Exercise and Fibromyalgia

When I first started blogging I spent a day or two a week and focused on writing about something other than a daily log of my exercise routine or the happenings of my days. Honestly, since starting back up with the blog it has been mundane. Just a countdown of days and commentary about what routine the Les Mills Pump calendar tells me to do. I am sure many people are getting pretty bored with reading the same things over and over and over again. So from here on out I will try my best to mix in some other health and/or fitness related articles in. Mix things up a bit.

Most people know i suffer with Fibromyalgia. It makes life harder. Sometimes even the touch of my clothing against my skin hurts. It can wear on you to always be in pain and to not be able to have the quality of life you crave. Motivating to get things done is hard when you are battling with the chronic fatigue and depression that comes along with it. Most people don’t understand what fibromyalgia is. I will assure you it is real, it is not an excuse and it is hard to live with. With the help of my doctor we have found a combination of medications and physical activities that helps cope with the fibromyalgia and improve my daily life.

What is Fibromyalgia?

The word Fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek words for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Fibromyalgia is a condition that affects around 1 and 3 percent of people. The debilitating syndrome includes stiffness, chronic fatigue, diffuse tenderness, widespread muscle aches and pains, numbness, nutritional deficiencies, migraines and muscle spasms. It can make everyday activities such as working with your arms, walking, carrying objects, and most everyday chores hard to accomplish. In my own experience during a flare it is especially hard to do anything where my arms have to be raised up or have to do the same repeated motions in general. Most people who have this condition have to deal with pain, fatigue, psychological distresses and difficulty coping with stress. Fibromyalgia is thought to be caused by increased sensitivity to pain as well as environmental factors.

Fibro is quite often considered an arthritic condition even though it is not a form of arthritis because it does not inflame or damage the joints or muscles. However it does cause significant pain and fatigue and it can interfere with a person’s ability to perform simple everyday tasks. Just like arthritis, fibro is categorized as a rheumatic condition. Simply put a condition that impairs soft tissues and joints as well as causing chronic pain.

Exercise and Fibromyalgia

Many people think that common sense would suggest that people with fibromyalgia should not exercise or be anything other than sedentary.  In reality you can’t afford not to be at least a little active when you have fibro. But it seems that most patients with fibromyalgia avoid physical activity and limit it due to fears that it will worsen their symptoms.

Exercise when done properly will interrupt the downhill spiral of muscle and cardiovascular reconditioning which can lead to loss of function or atrophy. Deconditioning can and will lead to increased pain and soreness after the smallest amounts of activity. It can also lead to or worsen tight muscles, lack of range of motion and postural balances. All these things put further strain on the body and make moving harder.

A well-balanced exercise routine had been shown to be one of the most effective treatments for fibromyalgia. Just remember that starting can be a challenge and to star small with simple activities such as walking and other gentile exercises. It is important to slowly build up endurance slowly. Just be sure that a doctor approves your activities and be sure to be honest with your doctor about how certain activities affect your pain level, flexibility and general mobility. Many doctors recommend being active and if your doctor has not brought up the option to you talk to him and find out what you can do. From personal experience exercise has helped with the depression and moodiness that comes along with having to deal with chronic pain. With more strength and increased flexibility everyday tasks are not as impossible. I only have to take maybe two breaks from blow-drying my hair instead of the break every minute to minute of a half of holding a blow drier. It may sound lame but small victories are victories nonetheless. An accomplishment or positive change is positive and even small victories deserve celebration.

Exercising releases the levels of stress hormones in the body such as cortisol and adrenaline so it has a neurochemical benefit to fibro patients. Exercise also increases the body’s production of endorphins and those are your body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators. Along with those benefits there is the sense of pride and confidence in knowing you accomplished something. Your strength and stamina will increase and there is even the possibility to have your waist like shrink!

Just to be clear, I am not in any way, shape or form a doctor or any type of medical professional. This was written based on my own personal experience as a person with fibromyalgia, what I have learned from my wonderful doctors as well as books, articles and medical journals on the subject of fibromyalgia. Be sure to clear any exercise routine with your doctor. And remember every person feels the effects of fibromyalgia differently.  Physical activity may not be recommended in every case. But it does improve the quality of my life.

Lunges Suck

lmp day 36

Well not really. I just don’t like them. It hurts and I swear through the entire track. In between the billion lunges that you have to do during the leg track on Les Mills Pump, Pump & Shred there is a short burst of squats. Those squats are like heaven. Because they relieve the pressure from my calves and knees and because they are not lunges. I may not like them but I still push through them every time. I’d rather do anything else. Really hoping I can build up to doing them without it sucking so bad and not have to yell at the trainer on the DVD and call her horrible names while dropping the F-Bomb in between that. One of these days. Right? It is a good thing it is a DVD because the foul language spewing from my mouth would get me banned from any public place for sure. I could totally make a sailor blush.

So today was the first day of Phase Two and Day 36 of Les Mills Pump. So that leaves 86 days until Round One is completed. Today’s workout was of course Pump and Shred as I stated above. It went well. During the squat track I was able to double the weight on the bar this time. Super exciting! Thinking for the back track I will up the weight once these darn stitches are out and the Clean and Presses can be done with a full on grip. During those I have been holding the bar with my bum finger extended instead of gripping the bar. To much pressure on the stitches. The stitches come out tomorrow afternoon. Hoping the gash is closed up enough to return to life as normal.

Now It is time to have a healthy snack and focus on watching a movie. Halloween II started right when I started blogging! Love, Love, Love all the horror movies that are on in October. If my family weren’t a bunch of scaredy cats they would be on 24/7!

Days 32 and 33 of 120

87 Days to go!!

87 Days to go!!

Yesterday was day 32 of 120 Days of Les Mills Pump. The good old stitched up hand was throbbing so I swapped yesterday with today. Day 33 was a rest day so I figured why not. So yesterday was deemed a rest day. spent the day at a doctor’s office (always fun), had lunch with a good friend, babysat, cooked dinner and all that fun stuff. And you can’t forget that it was Thursday and Vampire Diaries was on!

Today’s workout was Hard Core Abs and Flow. Got a few of the Plank to Push Ups in then had to drop down to a regular plank. Not that I couldn’t do them but it was hurting the good old hand. This knuckle thing is ridiculous. You never notice how much you need to use it until it is stitched up. I swear the thing looks like an evil smile face. During flow I didn’t get all the moves in for the same reason. My best was put into it and that is what matters.

Had a houseful of kids this evening, it was a lot of fun! Mr Baby stayed up past his baby bedtime relishing in all the fun and excitement. Hoping this means he sleeps good for me tonight! He even took a minute of his time to pinch where my stitches are and rip one of them a bit. OUCH!!

Food wise I have been pretty good at staying clean. Things that are not taste fake now so it is easier to not give into temptation. It will only keep getting easier!

Now it is time to finish watching Silver Bullet and try to get 475 more calories in for the day. Kind of behind!

Day 29 of 120 Was a Challenge!

lmp day 29

Whew! I am sore and exhausted. Today’s workout was Pump and Shred.  It was nice to have a new workout added into the routine. Spices things up and helps keep my interest. This is the third disc in the Les Mills Pump System, it is a 45 minute Body Pump workout that is 45 minutes long and it focuses on the back, chest, hamstrings, quads as well as the abs.

With the stitched up knuckle grasping a bar (especially with weight on it) is out of the question. It puts too much pressure on the stitches and possibility of ripping them out does not sound appealing in any way whatsoever. For a few things I was able to use the bar and just rest it on the heel of my hand or in the groove between the pointer finger and the thumb. For everything else I found a set of ankle weights in the basement and strapped them onto my wrist. Not much weight but I like the idea of using those over using no weight at all. During the plank portion (they call it a hover) I had to settle with just doing some extra crunches and an Iron Cross.

All in all the workout went great and I sweat my butt off. Hopefully literally because that is the point in doing all of this. Tomorrow is weigh in day. I am super nervous to see if my 30 day goal has been met. I really hope so because there have been just too many issues to work past and I honestly feel that it screwed everything up. We shall see though.

Nifty ankle weights on my wrists. I love my Hot Pink workout mat BTW :)

Deja Vu?

lmp day 25

I feel like I have done this before..

Back to Day 25 today. Now that there is more feeling in my thigh balance and form are not as much of a problem. Granted there are still issues and the workout was not exactly comfortable, could be worse though. No workout could have happened.

Today’s scheduled workout was Hard Core Abs along with a 45 minute walk. Hard Core Abs went well, a tad bit harder than normal. Possibly due to the fact that I have skipped workouts this past week and that took its toll. In place of the 34 minute walk I did 35 minutes of low impact aerobics. Started to feel quite imbalanced so I skipped the last 5 minutes and went straight to the cool down. It was possible to push through it but I didn’t. It is not as easy to push through things when you have medical issues. In no way am I disappointed in the workout and it definitely got my heart rate up and a good sweat going.

So it looks like I am back in action! Just in time for the RunScreamRun 5k on Saturday. Definitely just power walking through this one. Dr didn’t give me the go ahead to try running. no matter what it will be a ton of fun and I am very much looking forward to my 3 mile power walk.

Food wise I am still on target. Eating clean, taking in 1,700 cals a day and drinking LOTS of water.

Time to make dinner and put together my costume for Saturday. Hope everyone has had a terrific Thursday!

Day 7 of 120 & Going Shoeless

Today is Day 7 of 120. That means only 113 days to go. At the end of week 1 I really do not feel any different at all, honestly there was no expectation to.  Well there is soreness and exhaustion but should we really count that? Hoping my energy level goes up next week. Today is a rest day but more than likely I will end up in the Basement of Doom and do a little something that is low impact and that will help stretch and lengthen the muscles. Flexibility and I do not belong in the same sentence as of now.

After doing some reading and research working out barefooted sounds like something to try.  Many people swear by their shoes but I see many points of going shoeless. Granted anything outdoors I would always wear shoes. Being barefooted outdoors freaks me out. On the beach in the sand is the only place you will find me outside without shoes on.  Yoga is already done barefoot or in a pair of yoga socks so I have that down already.

Athletic shoes can change your center of gravity thus making your weight shift forward. Your body will compensate and in turn exaggerate your lumbar curve and overextend the back. I really think this would make lifting a bit more comfortable. Especially on days where my Fibromyalgia is acting like a jerk.  it is said that barefoot exercise helps strengthen the feet, improve balance, muscle alignment, reduce foot and ankle pain as well as reduce the chance of injury.

I don’t feel like there is any harm in trying. If I don’t like it I can always put my shoes on. Simple as that.

If Arnold did it can it really be that bad of a thing to try???

Working out without shoes is far from a new concept and may not appeal to everyone. By no means am I a doctor and all around orthopedic know it all. So you should do your research and talk to a doctor before starting a workout.

Day 5 of 120

Wait, shouldn’t of yesterday been day 5. Why yes, yes it was. But this morning had to be my day 5. don’t you just love it when life happens?

The night before i didn’t get any sleep, it started with a migraine, then my DH decided he needed the tv on until after 1 am, then he started snoring, then I went to the guest room. Guess what? The baby monitor won’t work in there. It just beeps and beeps and beeps. Maybe it was the powerstrip i was using, or maybe it is because I just was not meant to get any sleep. I eventually decided to sleep in the rocker in the nursery. Just about to fall asleep and here come Pat sneaking up on me and scaring the crap out of me, telling me to go to bed. Yeah, because the baby will be up any minute and in less than 2 hours I have to get Emma up for school. I am annoyed, my head is pounding so I couldn’t sleep. Finally it is decided that he will stay up and I will sleep. So I spent far to much of my morning sleeping off my migraine and trying to rest up. After all that I ended up helping out a friend, running errands then heading home. A new migraine set in and I just could not bear to work out late in the evening with one. it was late and I needed to worry about dinner. it was already 2 plus hours past dinnertime. Ooops. Needless to say I felt like I didn’t have time. OMG! I said I didn’t have time! It’s 4% of my day, I know this. I didn’t have 4% to give so I didn’t. There was some guilt but sometimes other things are more important than working out. Yep, I said it. Send your fitness is number 1 mob over with pitchforks and torches!

So anyhow to fix the fact that yesterday didn’t work out this morning was Day 5 and late this afternoon will be Day 6. I completed Pump Challenge this am. Feeling pretty good.  The compression sleeves came in, tested them out this morning with my workout. I was still in a lot of pain during the lunge track but it wasn’t crippling pain. So I think they work.

Heading to the Farmer’s Market this morning once I can get everyone out of bed. I need to find jeans for our pictures too. Emma and Ian’s outfits have been purchased, Pat is set and I am good to go minus jeans. Hopefully I won’t fit the new jeans long once I get them. 🙂

Got over it and did it today 🙂

Getting better..

Well, I think my knee is getting better. It still hurts but I was able to do a little more last night at the gym. It may not be much but I was able to jog for 6 minutes before I had to move back down to a brisk walk and I was able to use the elliptical machine for 20 just fine. Even though I know I still will not be running on Sunday for The Color Run, having the option of short bursts of jogging makes me happier. Maybe by Monday I will be able to attempt starting Pump again. 🙂

And for your viewing pleasure here are some pictures from our trip to Idaho.
